A two vehicle crash in Lapeer County’s Deerfield Township resulted in one death and a two-hour closure of the roadway yesterday afternoon.
The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office reports that the crash occurred around 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, when an 82-year-old Lapeer man, driving a Chevrolet Silverado on Lapeer Road, attempted a left turn into the Deerfield Pines mobile home park. However, the Silverado turned in front of a southbound Dodge Durango, resulting in a collision.
All three of the Durango’s occupants were pinned inside the SUV after the crash occurred and required extrication by the Deerfield Township Fire Department. One of the occupants, identified by authorities as 94-year-old Dorothy Lambert of North Branch, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two other occupants, identified as a 73-year-old North Branch man and his 72-year-old wife, sustained serious injuries, requiring transport to McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital.
The Silverado’s driver and his passenger, his 77-year-old wife, were also transported to the hospital.
Though investigation into the crash continues, authorities do not believe speeding or intoxication were factors for either involved party. MDOT Bay Region reports that Lapeer Road between Burnside and Barnes Lake Roads was closed for about two hours for investigation and cleanup, from about 12:30 p.m. to 2:40 p.m.
