A dog was shot and killed after it attacked a St. Clair County Sheriff’s deputy last weekend in what Sheriff Mat King calls “an unfortunate incident.”

The incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, when deputies were called to St. Clair County Animal Control regarding a found dog. Upon arrival, the dog was located in a vehicle with a harness on. A family had found the dog loose in the area and had brought it to Animal Control in an attempt to drop it off.

When a deputy opened the hatch of the vehicle, the dog was immediately aggressive, biting the deputy twice in the arm and hand. The deputy was able to contain the dog by closing the hatch. He immediately called Central Dispatch requesting EMS,  subsequently heading to the hospital for treatment.

Back up was sent to the location, where two additional deputies attempted to safely relocate the dog into the building. After a dog stick was located, deputies were able to secure the dog and attempted to get it into Animal Control. However, despite being restrained, the dog continued to be aggressive, thrashing out multiple times, and due to the continuous aggression, the dog was dispatched with a single gunshot.

The sheriff’s office reports that the investigation remains open, with the dog’s owner having not been located at this time.
