In partnership with the City of Port Huron and Michigan Community Capital, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) has awarded $1.26 million in MI Neighborhood Grant Programs funds to support a new low- to moderate-income housing development that will expand quality, affordable homeownership opportunities in the community.
The Lansing-based housing nonprofit leading the project will develop 12 duplex-style condominiums, representing more than $4 million in total investment through the MI Neighborhood Grant Program. To help complete the financing package, the City of Port Huron is contributing $650,000 in remaining American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, ensuring the project can move forward and helping close a critical funding gap.
In 2025, housing projects in Port Huron—led by a mix of private developers and City-supported initiatives—secured $20.6 million in funding from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. These investments are driving a total of $28.8 million in development activity and the creation of 89 new housing units, including both rental and owner-occupied homes.
Looking ahead, an additional 59 units of affordable housing are in the pipeline, representing roughly $18 million in future investment as projects continue to pursue final funding. Each home will be approximately 1,300 square feet, featuring 3 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms, offering modern, energy-efficient, family-friendly living spaces aimed at increasing attainable homeownership within the city. The development will be located between 25th/26th Street and Nern Street/Cleveland Avenue.
Construction is expected to begin following completion of final development approvals and financing steps. For more information, please contact Port Huron City Manager James Freed at 810-984-9740.
