An attempted traffic stop in Caro last Friday led to a multi-agency police chase and a woman being arrested.
The events began on Friday, November 21, when a Caro Police Officer attempted a traffic stop for an equipment violation on a white GMC Acadia in Caro. However, the vehicle failed to stop and fled north on M-24. The Caro officer pursued the vehicle north before it turned west onto Fairgrove Road and continued fleeing through the Village of Fairgrove and west to Reese Road, at which point the pursuit was terminated.
Shortly after the termination, Tuscola County Sheriff’s Deputy KyleBroecker was traveling east on State Street in Caro when he observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Deputy Broecker attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle again refused to stop and fled west onto M-81, reaching speeds of approximately 110 mph.
Michigan State Police troopers deployed spike strips in the Village of Reese in an attempt to end the pursuit. While the suspect vehicle struck the spike strips, deflating multiple tires, the vehicle continued fleeing westbound on M-81, passing Reese Road. The pursuit was terminated just west of M-15 after it became clear the suspect was not stopping despite the tire deflation. One MSP trooper continued following the vehicle and maintained visual contact.
The vehicle continued into Saginaw County, then northbound onto I-75, entering Bay County and eventually Bay City. During this time, the vehicle reportedly struck a gate on one of the bridges in Bay City. The suspect vehicle then traveled south on M-15, where Bay County Sheriff’s Office deputies and MSP resumed pursuit.
Deputies Broecker and Peterson were advised of the vehicle’s return path and responded to the west side of Tuscola County. The suspect vehicle re-entered the area, turning eastbound onto M-81 and entering the Village of Reese, where it ultimately came to a stop on Saginaw Street.
The driver, a 41-year-old Fairgrove woman, was taken into custody by MSP troopers without incident. She was turned over to the Caro Police Department as the initiating agency.
The suspect was lodged on charges of Fleeing and Eluding and Reckless Driving stemming from both the Caro Police and Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office incidents.
