An attempted traffic stop by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office led to a car chase that crossed into Sanilac County last Friday.

Deputies attempted to stop a black Infinity on Lapeer Road, west of Wadhams Road, just after midnight on Friday, November 21, due to no visible license plate on the vehicle. Instead of complying, the female driver fled the scene, disregarding lights and sirens. The driver continued northbound, speeding and repeatedly crossing into oncoming traffic.

The pursuit led law enforcement through Clyde and Grant Townships, and eventually into southern Sanilac County. The chase ended in Sanilac County’s Worth Township when the driver crashed into a tree behind Zimmer Auto Sales.

The woman was medically cleared at McLaren Port Huron and taken to St. Clair County Detention and Intervention Center. Her vehicle was unregistered and without insurance.

Virginia Smith, 39 years old, from Port Huron was arraigned in 72nd District Court on Friday on three felony charges and three misdemeanors. Felonies include fleeing from the police in the second degree, and two counts of resisting and obstructing police. Misdemeanor charges include operating while intoxicated–second offense, reckless driving, and open alcohol container in vehicle. She was denied bond.

Her vehicle was also ordered to be seized, according to court records.
