A North Branch man was killed after being ejected from his vehicle Sunday afternoon in Lapeer County’s Goodland Township.

Lapeer County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to an injury traffic crash that took place on Van Dyke Road/M-53 near Muck Road around 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2025.

Investigators determined that 49-year-old Steven Henderson of North Branch had been driving alone and south in a 2023 Kia K5 on Van Dyke Road when he attempted to navigate the road’s curved section, north of the Muck Road intersection. While navigating the curve, the vehicle left the roadway and entered the west ditch, subsequently encountering a driveway embankment and becoming airborne. The vehicle rolled once it landed, ultimately coming to rest on its tires along the road’s west shoulder.

Henderson had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and was ejected from the vehicle. Though a passing motorist stopped to assist and began CPR while calling for 911, the CPR was unsuccessful and Henderson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Imlay City Police Department, the Goodland Township Fire Department, Lapeer County EMS, Metamora Township Police Department’s Drone Division, the Lapeer County Reconstruction team, and the county’s road commission.

Van Dyke was closed for about three hours due to investigation and clean up, with wreckage cleared by Paul’s Towing of Almont and the Road Commission clearing the road’s surface of remaining debris to ensure motorist safety.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office, with it unclear if alcohol or excessive speeds were factors in the crash.
