In a joint press release with the Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police’s Caro Post, the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is asking area parents to be aware of their children’s activities following several large pop-up parties in the Thumb area.
The sheriff’s office revealed in a press release on Tuesday, October 28 that, since July, authorities in Tuscola County have been dealing with large pop-up parties. These parties have occurred in all parts of the county including state game parking lots and homes, with the parties posted on social media and attended by teenage/high school students and people in their 30’s. People attending these large parties are from all over Mid-Michigan including people from Genesee, Lapeer, Sanilac, and Tuscola counties.
Several of these parties have resulted in Tuscola County Sheriff deputies and Michigan State Police troopers being called for fights and shots fired complaints. Investigations have been launched into incidents including a vehicle being shot, a person being severely beaten, a person being pistol-whipped, shots reported fired in a southern Tuscola County village, a criminal sexual conduct complaint, and an incident where a person had a gun placed to their head and the trigger pulled, with the person surviving as the gun did not fire. While some arrests have been made regarding these incidents, investigation still continues for others.
Authorities have confirmed that youth from the Sanilac County area have also attended several of these parties. Parents and guardians are encouraged to be aware of their children’s social media activity, monitor where they are going, and talk with them about the dangers and potential criminal consequences associated with attending such gatherings.
