What should have been a 60 mile trip home turned into an over 250 mile journey for a lost Lapeer woman last week.

79-year-old Georgia Oates left a home in Macomb County’s Eastpointe on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 21, with the plan to head back to Lapeer. However, Georgia called her son later that day at 5:00 p.m., stating she was lost and was going to stop to gather her bearings.

However, it appears her son was unable to get a hold of her afterwards, with state police reporting that the woman’s phone seemed to have been turned off or had run out of battery. Despite her intent to go to Lapeer, Georgia’s vehicle was later seen near northbound I-75 from M-46 in Saginaw County, around 6:24 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22.

While it is still unclear how she ended up so far from home, Michigan State Police reported shortly before 3:00 p.m. on October 22 that Georgia had been found safe in the Cheboygan area, which is less than 20 miles from the Mackinac Bridge at the tip of the state’s lower peninsula.

The state police again thanks all those who called in tips and/or assisted Georgia during her journey.
