In addition to approving the county’s apportionment report, as presented by Equalization Director Keegan Bengel, the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners authorized a countywide housing study at their Tuesday meeting on October 21, 2025.
The study, to be performed by the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, will be funded with $16,000 from the local brownfield revolving fund. However, use of funding is dependent on a $50,000 grant being awarded to the county by the state’s Office of Rural Prosperity. The total project is estimated to cost $68,400.
Also approved at Tuesday’s meeting was the sending of two sheriff office lieutenants to the Michigan State University School of Staff and Command, a 400-hour course to be held from January 2026 to June 2026, at a cost of $8,600. Seventy-five percent of that funding will be reimbursed by the Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority Grant, while 25% will be reimbursed through the MCOLES Continuing Professional Education grant funds.
The commissioners also selected Thomas Ellenson to serve a four-year term on the county’s veterans affairs committee, with the term ending November 1, 2029. Ellenson currently serves Maple Valley Township as their zoning administrator, a planning committee member and as chairman for their board of review.
