A Monday afternoon traffic crash in Watertown Township killed one and injured three others.

Sanilac County Central Dispatch was called around 4:20 p.m. on Monday, October 6, with a report of a personal injury traffic crash at the intersection of East Frenchline Road and South Banner Road in Watertown Township. Deputies from the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Sandusky Fire Department and Sanilac EMS, were dispatched to the scene.

Initial investigation determined that a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 22-year-old Sandusky woman, was traveling westbound on E. Frenchline Road when she attempted to pass a 2011 Ford Super Duty pickup hauling a grain trailer, operated by a 24-year-old Peck man.

During the pass, the Pathfinder’s driver observed an oncoming 2006 Chevrolet Silverado operated by a 62-year-old Sandusky man traveling eastbound. The Pathfinder driver attempted to return to her lane but struck the grain trailer as the Ford was slowing to turn north onto S. Banner Road. The Pathfinder then re-entered the westbound lane and was subsequently struck by the oncoming Silverado, sending both vehicles into the south ditch.

The 62-year-old driver of the Silverado sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two passengers in the Silverado — a 45-year-old Sandusky man and a 58-year-old Sandusky man — were treated by EMS and transported to McKenzie Health System for treatment of injuries. The 22-year-old Pathfinder driver was treated on scene and later transported by family to McKenzie Health System.

The names of those involved are being withheld pending completion of the investigation. Deputies were assisted on scene by the Michigan State Police.
