Marlette Police Department monitors Fenner Street following speeding complaints

Due to recent complaints of constant excessive speed on Fenner Street, officers with the Marlette Police Department have spent several extra hours in the area over the past several weeks, collecting data as they did.

Utilizing an unmarked traffic monitor loaned from another department to check vehicle speeds, the monitoring happened 24 hours a day from Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 28. The monitoring included detour traffic from the city’s Fall Family Fun Day on Saturday, September 20, and included vehicles traveling both directions.

Fenner Street has a speed limit of 25 miles per hour.

Over the 10 day period, almost 10,000 cars were monitored, with the average speed traveled through the area being about 21 miles per hour. According to the department’s data, about 98% of cars travelling in the Fenner Street area did so at speeds under 30 miles per hour, with 80% adhering to the speed limit and travelling under 25 mph.

Of the cars monitored, a reported 2% went over 30 miles per hour in that area, including two vehicles reported travelling between 43 and 50 miles per hour. However, no vehicles were recorded going over 50 miles per hour.

The department thanks the vast majority of drivers traveling at a safe speed, noting that though 2 vehicles out of almost 10,000 traveling over 40mph in a week period is not a lot, it is still too many.

The department also shared in their social media post that more monitoring will occur on Fenner Street, as well as in other areas of the city where police have received similar speeding complaints, with patrols being added as well. The department thanks the community for all the reports and concerns.
