Sandusky City Council approves new police contract in 4-2 vote

Despite two votes against it, the Sandusky City Council approved the contract for new police chief Scott McKenny during their September 22nd meeting and brought a monthslong process to a close.

Council members Tim Torp and Todd Hillman cited issues with the contract as part of their reason to reject it. Torp said that he would have liked to assist with drafting the contract, due to his experience in law enforcement, and Hillman noted that he was not happy about the lack of communication throughout the entire hiring process.

“We need to do something about the process,” Hillman said, explaining that he believed that some aspects of the contract should be different, but when he brought those concerns to other council members, he had been told “that’s what we’ve always done in the past.”

“I just really hope that after this is over that when we move forward, we can revamp things and make things the way they’re supposed to be,” Hillman said.

Despite his rejection of the contract, Hillman did take time to clear up a misunderstanding about the posting of the position to the job site for the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Hillman had alleged at last week’s meeting that the city had not posted the job to the site, but internal investigation by Hillman and City Manager Dave Faber found that Faber had submitted the request and the position had been posted.

Also at the Monday night meeting, the council approved the purchase of a new dump truck, with the plan being to travel to Minnesota in early October to look over two options.
