A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Huron County following a lengthy investigation into a July carjacking incident.
The incident occurred on Saturday July 12, 2025, with carjacking victim Austin A. Bieri, of Bad Axe, reporting the crime immediately after escaping from the carjacker.
Bieri told 911 dispatchers that his assailant had apparently gotten into the backseat of Bieri’s 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe some time before he got out of work at an Elkton manufacturing plant. When Bieri got into his vehicle, the assailant held him at knife point over the back of the seat, demanding money. As Bieri had no cash, the pair drove to a bank ATM in Bad Axe, and Bieri withdrew what he could.
After he withdrew the money, the pair headed south on Port Crescent Street, coming to a stop at the Huron Avenue intersection’s stoplight. Bieri was able to make his escape then, running from the passenger side. Rather than pursuing him, the masked assailant drove off in the Tahoe. Despite the quick report and three law enforcement departments responding to assist in a search of the area, the search yielded no results, and a “Be On the Look-Out” alert was activated across the tri-county area for the case.
Two days after the carjacking, on Monday, July 14, Oliver Township firemen were called to extinguish a vehicle found burning in a cornfield on the southside of the manufacturing plant Bieri was carjacked at. The burning vehicle was identified as the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe, and was impounded as evidence after it was extinguished.
Though the Huron County Sheriff’s Office does not share the exact circumstances, Sheriff Kelly Hanson reported that on Friday, September 5, 24-year-old Aron M. Laycock was arrested by Detective-Deputy Daryl Ford on two charges. He is currently lodged at the Huron County Jail on a charge each of carjacking and tampering with evidence, with his bond set at $50,000 cash.
More charges are possible as the investigation continues. Also contributing to the investigation of this incident was the Elkton Village Police.
