State budget deadlock threatens local school funding, warns Deckerville Superintendent

Superintendent Matthew Connelly of Deckerville Community Schools is urging community members to join him in contacting state lawmakers about the delayed school funding budget, as it threatens the resources available to the school district for program costs, teacher and staff compensation, supplies and more.

In a letter to families and staff at Deckerville Community Schools, dated Thursday, August 21, 2025, Connelly notes that “state law mandates that lawmakers approve a K-12 school funding budget by July 1,” but “that deadline has passed and no agreement has been reached.” Michigan lawmakers have about six weeks left to finalize a state budget before hitting a deadline on Oct. 1 that would trigger a state government shutdown, which could further “delay funding that schools depend on to operate,” according to Connelly.

If the Legislature does not pass a budget, Connelly says that school districts will miss out on their first scheduled state aid payment on October 20, 2025. According to the superintendent, missing out on that payment would mean that Deckerville Community Schools would miss out on funding used to: maintain class sizes and provide student support services and school meals; continue bus operations and keep classrooms supplied; fund academic, arts, athletics and other student programs; and compensate teachers and staff who work directly with the students.

With this need in mind, Connelly urged the Deckerville community to join him in contacting state representatives, such as District 98 Rep. Greg Alexander, to urge for a quick resolution to the budget deadlock and thus security for local K-12 education funding. You can contact Rep. Alexander by emailing GregAlexander@house.mi.gov or calling (517) 373-1791.

The representative is also holding office hours next week on: Monday, Aug. 25 from 9-10 a.m. at Marlette Township Hall, located at 6725 Airport Road in Marlette; Friday, Aug. 29 from 9-10 a.m. at Huron County Memorial Airport, located at 352 Thompson Road in Bad Axe; and Friday, Aug. 29 from 11 a.m. to noon at Sandusky Airport, located at 1213 N. Sandusky Road in Sandusky.
