Michigan State Troopers with the Caro post are investigating after an elderly woman was scammed out of $17,000.

Michigan State Police report that on Wednesday, August 6, a 95-year-old woman in Huron County’s Sigel Township was contacted, by telephone, by an individual claiming to be her son. Also on that call was a second subject claiming to be a public defender who asked for $9,000 in bail money due to her son being involved in a crash.

The suspect arranged to have a courier pick up the money from the victim’s residence. The suspect, a tall skinny dark-haired man, believed to be of Middle Eastern descent, arrived around 3:25 p.m. in a dark gray Chevrolet Malibu, and picked up the money.

Later in the day, the victim received an additional call advising more bail money, this time $8,000, was needed. The victim agreed and an additional suspect, described as a heavy-set, dark-haired, white woman, arrived in a black Jeep and picked up the money.

Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact the Caro Post at 989-673-2156 and ask for Tpr. Dennis Bills or D/Sgt. Daniel Inman.
