
A Melvin man accidentally shot his wife in the shoulder Wednesday night, according to the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.
Sanilac County Central Dispatch was contacted shortly before 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, with a report of an accidental shooting in the 600 block of Mortimer Line Road in Speaker Township.
Deputies responded to the scene, with investigation revealing that a 67-year-old Melvin man had been handling a firearm after shooting a raccoon just outside his residence. While attempting to make the firearm safe, he inadvertently chambered and discharged a live round, which struck his 65-year-old wife in the right shoulder.
The victim was treated at the scene by Marlette EMS and transported to McLaren Port Huron for further medical treatment. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
The names of those involved are being withheld at this time as the investigation remains ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
