A male juvenile is facing five charges after stealing a vehicle with a child sleeping in the backseat and leading police in a high-speed pursuit.

A petition was authorized on Friday, July 18, charging the juvenile with Kidnapping – Child Enticement, Unlawful Imprisonment, Unlawful Driving Away of a Motor Vehicle, Fleeing and Eluding – Third Degree, and Operating a Motor Vehicle While License Suspended, Revoked, or Denied.

The charges stem from an incident on Thursday, July 17, when a vehicle was stolen near Pine Grove Avenue and Hancock Street in Port Huron, with a one-year-old child asleep in the backseat at the time of the theft.

A Marysville Police officer spotted the stolen vehicle traveling on I-94 near Gratiot and attempted to stop it. The driver, the male juvenile, fled, leading officers on a high-speed pursuit. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office continued the chase, with speeds reaching over 100 mph.

The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into multiple parked cars off 21 Mile Road near Sugarbush Road in Chesterfield. The juvenile driver was immediately taken into custody. Emergency medical personnel checked the child, who was found unharmed and cleared at the scene.

The juvenile remains lodged at the Macomb Juvenile Detention Facility.
