A Shelby Township man was accidentally shot this weekend, according to the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, Sanilac County Central Dispatch received a report of an accidental shooting in the 5400 block of Lamton Rd in Evergreen Township.
Deputies and Cass City MMR were dispatched to the scene. Initial investigation determined that a 21-year-old Sterling Heights man had been clearing his firearm in the home’s basement after shooting earlier in the day. The man attempted to clear the firearm without first removing the magazine, resulting in a live round being chambered.
Believing the firearm was unloaded, he inadvertently discharged it, striking his friend—a 20-year-old man from Shelby Township—in the right wrist. The victim was treated on scene by Cass City MMR and later transported to McLaren Lapeer for further medical treatment.
Alcohol was determined to be a factor in this incident.
Deputies were assisted on scene by the Cass City Police Department. Names are being withheld at this time, as the incident remains under investigation.
Charges will be forwarded to the Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
