The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office says that a technical error during installation of a new emergency system was the cause of an active shooter report yesterday morning.
The call went out from the Lapeer County Courthouse shortly before 9:50 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, with several local agencies responding quickly to the call. The call was determined to be a false alarm, with the cause believed to be an issue with the new emergency system inside the courthouse, which is currently being installed and is in the testing phase. The issue is currently being looked at by the vendor company and internally to determine what prompted the alert.
Despite the accidental nature of the incident, Sheriff Scott McKenna praised responding agencies for their timeliness and professionalism in responding to the call. The sheriff reassures the public that the call was strictly a technical issue and that no one was in danger at any point.
