A man has been arraigned following an armed robbery attempt at Lapeer’s Holiday Inn Express this past weekend.

Lapeer County Central Dispatch was contacted shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, with a report of an armed robbery at the Holiday Inn Express on Demille Road in the City of Lapeer. The suspect was described as a black male aged 18 to 20, standing between 5’4” and 5’8”, and wearing a gray hoodie, black pants, white tennis shoes and a face mask.

The suspect jumped on the hotel lobby’s counter with what appeared to be a handgun inside a bag, demanding money from the cash register before fleeing in an unknown direction. No firearm was recovered during this investigation, nor was any money stolen from the business during the incident.

Assisted by the Michigan State Police and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, Lapeer City Police searched the area for the suspect. A man matching the suspect description was taken into custody close to a nearby Burger King, being lodged at the Lapeer County Jail for armed robbery.

The suspect, Dequantell Hayward-Lee Jamerson, age 37 of Flint, was arraigned on Monday, June 9, and is facing one count of armed robbery and one count of habitual offender, fourth offense notice. He is being held at the Lapeer County Jail pending his next court date on Friday, June 20.

Jamerson was out on parole for unarmed robbery in Oakland County at the time of this incident, and due to the nature of the crime and his prior violent history, he faces a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted.
