Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office warns of scammers impersonating state DMV

The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is warning about scammers pretending to be the Michigan DMV.

Michigan does not have a Department of Motor Vehicles, with all vehicle and driver services handled by the Michigan Secretary of State.

Residents have reported receiving calls, texts, or emails claiming urgent problems with their license or registration. The scammer identifies themselves as being from the “Michigan DMV” — a fake agency name not used in Michigan. Victims are told to click links, provide personal info, or pay fines or fees.

If you receive a call from anyone saying they’re from the Michigan DMV, do not trust the call, and immediately hang up. If in doubt, call the Secretary of State’s Office directly at 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424).
