The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office proudly welcomed Deputy Thomas Peterson back to his duties with the agency, following a serious injury in February 2024.

Peterson, who has been with the agency since 2018, was assisting another deputy with a disabled vehicle on M-24 near Fremont Township’s Blackmore Road on Friday, February 16, 2024, when he was struck by a passing motorist. The deputy was thrown into a ditch and suffered leg and ankle fractures, as well as other injuries.

The motorist later pleaded no contest to two charges: operating while intoxicated causing serious injury and failing to use due care when passing a stationary emergency vehicle, both felonies.

The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office praised Deputy Peterson’s return as a “moment of hope, resilience, and community support,” with the agency saying the deputy’s “strength, dedication, and perseverance through this horrific incident speak volumes about his character and commitment to the people of Tuscola County.”
