A former Unionville fire chief was arrested and arraigned after stealing over $5000 from the department’s non-profit fund.
Unionville Fire Department learned in December of 2024 that their non-profit 501c account was missing funds. It was suspected that the former fire chief, 35-year-old Nicholas Sakon of Unionville, had been using the account for personal use. Sakon had served the department for 18 years, spending the last ten years as the chief.
A thorough investigation by Michigan State Police Caro Post detectives found that Sakon had stolen over $5000 since May of 2023 for personal purchases. The Tuscola County Prosecutor charged Sakon with a felony charge of Embezzlement of $1000.00 or more but less than $20,000 from a Non-Profit or Charitable Organization, which is a 10-year felony and/or $15,000, or 3 times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater.
Sakon was arrested by troopers and arraigned in the 71B District Court of Tuscola County on Thursday, May 22. Bond was set at $20,000. He will be back in court for a probable cause hearing on June 4 at 8:15 a.m.
