The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office is warning local residents of a recently reported scam.
Residents have been called by someone identifying themselves as “Lt. Stevens” from the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, soliciting Bitcoin for “bond” payments. However, the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office does not employ a Lt. Stevens, nor would an officer of any agency call to solicit for bond payment over the phone. Furthermore, the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office does not accept Bitcoin for payment of bonds, nor any other form of cryptocurrency payment.
Though these people can sound very convincing and may even be borderline threatening, do not give them any money in any form.
If you still feel uneasy, please call the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office directly at (810) 664-1801 or Lapeer County Central Dispatch at (810) 667-0292 to check the validity of a call you may have received.
