Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson reports that no one was hurt after a boat capsized Saturday, June 3, near Caseville Township.
Huron County Marine Deputies were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. to Wild Fowl Bay between the western end of Sand Point and North Island, to a report of two fishermen in the water after their boat had capsized. As Huron Central dispatchers gathered further information from one of the men, the deputies responded on the department’s Caseville based 28-foot patrol boat in rough water conditions to the scene.
Both fishermen were in life jackets and were staying with their 16-foot capsized boat. Deputies recovered the two a little over an hour later with neither requesting any medical attention. The Clinton Township fishermen told the deputies that they had been bow fishing earlier on the southside of North Island and they never realized the east northeast wind had picked up to the degree that it had.
While on their way back in and going into the waves, their bilge pump had malfunctioned, which allowed for their boat to flood and capsize a few hours before dispatchers finally got their call. They had been trying all along to get a cell phone to work before it eventually did.
The boat was recovered the next day by salvagers.
