Deckerville & Sandusky schools join Big Thumb Conference during respective meetings Monday

Despite Marlette Community Schools tabling a resolution last week to join the Big Thumb Conference, both Deckerville and Sandusky Community Schools approved joining the new conference at their respective school board meetings last night.

In addition to joining the growing number of local schools joining the new conference, which unites the Greater Thumb Conference and the NCTL, Deckerville Schools also approved the purchase of a new camera system for the bus fleet. They also awarded a project bid to the Wenger Corporation, a company that makes and supplies products for “music education, performing arts, and athletic storage/team-rooms.”

Though they did table a resolution to approve removing the pool (pending a final bid for the project), the board did approve the school calendar for the upcoming year. The Deckerville Board of Education also approved a dedicated funds agreement presented to them by Deckerville Police Chief Fred Ameel, pending the finding and hiring of a full-time resource officer for the school, which would be partially funded by the Michigan State Police’s SRO Grant Award.

Meanwhile, the Sandusky Board of Education approved both the next year’s school calendar and a spending plan from Chartwells, not to exceed $247,000. The board also approved the hiring of a playground aide and a bus driver, as well as accepting the resignation of a Title I aide.

While Sandusky’s next Board of Education meeting will be on April 17 at 7:30 p.m, Deckerville’s board will be meeting again on April 24, at 7:00 p.m.
