Joel Wyatt, currently serving as District 5 Commissioner of the Sanilac County Board of Commission has changed course in this election year and has announced that instead of running or a third term on the Board of Commission, he has withdrawn his filing and instead has announced his intent to run for an upcoming opening on the Sanilac County Road Commission.
Below is his announcement as issued in a press release Monday, April 4th.
I am writing this as a notification of my withdrawal of candidacy for the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners 7 district. I have served these last 2 terms as being the District 5 Commissioner, assisting the board in the application of conservative governance for Sanilac County.
I am glad to have served and I thank those who put me in office to do so.
During this time, the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners have successfully applied sound, fiscally conservative principals in all areas of county governance to include the negotiation of labor contracts, the evaluation of purchasing contracts and in the filling of vacant positions.
There has been a movement in these last 4 years to restrict the rights of our citizens. I and our board members pushed back in 2020 with the Sanilac County Resolution Affirming the Second Amendment of The United States Constitution. In 2021, I and the new board countered the Governors lockdown measures with the Petition for Local Control of COVID 19 Health Emergency Mitigation.
We sought to have Governor Whitmer allow local agencies deal with local problems as needed. Then, again in 2021, as the federal and state governments were issuing restrictions on our freedoms and attempting to control our bodies, I and the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners crafted the Resolution in Support of Medical Autonomy.
A document to show our commitment to the inalienable right to decide what is best for our own bodies.
I and the Republican led Board of Commissioners have acted with the various county resources to ensure the rights of our citizens were not trampled upon nor their voices left unheard.
I encouraged the board to stand behind our citizens with these documents. I have also been to countless meetings exhorting the public to take part in this great American experiment through participation in local politics.
All political positions require Americans with integrity, grit, and a sense of duty to serve as the people’s representative. In this matter, I have done so and am pleased to rally behind a new person from my district to represent the people of Sanilac County’s new 7th district.
John Moody is a recent retiree who has served the citizens of Sanilac County for over 29 years. I know of John through his dedicated service and his application of conservative principals while operating as the Jail Administrator for the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office.
I am pleased to offer John Moody my support as 7 District Commissioner for the Sanilac County Board of Commissioners.
I am excited to announce my candidacy for the office of Sanilac County Road Commissioner.
During these last 4 years, I have heard more from the townships and their citizens about the road commission and the need for service improvements, than any other issue with county government.
It is my intention to serve in that capacity with the same intensity and focus that I have exerted thus far as District 5 County Commissioner.
As I have done previously, I intend to bring a new perspective to the Sanilac County Road Commission Board and to work effectively with that board. Some items include:
Bringing plans of improvements to the forecasting of weather events to allow time to prepare the roads for safe travel.
Implementing a ditch maintenance program that does not double tax the property owners and which provides the proper removal of water, decreasing flooded basements and road erosion.
Developing a program of grant research which will bring additional funding to Sanilac County.
16 years ago, I, my wife and the last four of our children chose to make Sanilac County our home. With its abundance of opportunities and choice living, we have enjoyed what this community has had to offer, and I hope to continue paying it back as a representative of its citizens.
