(SANILAC COUNTY) – Dan Dean, a former Sanilac County Commissioner, Drug Task Force Board Member, and recently retired Deckerville school teacher, was recognized for his 29 years of organizing the annual Drug Task Force Junior High Track Meet on Saturday, January 29th in Clare Michigan.

Sanilac County DTF Director Jim Johnson said Dean has been the driving force behind the annual track meet involving all seven school districts in Sanilac County since its inception in 1992.

The track meets were coupled with the D.A.R.E. Program provided to all schools in Sanilac County as a means to provide law enforcement in a different light to young students and educate on the harmful effects.

The award was presented to Dean by the Association of Track Officials of Michigan. According to Johnson, the award presented was the 2020 -2021 ATOM Distinguished Service Award, given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to track and field and / or cross country in the state of Michigan through direct or indirect involvement in the sport.

The Drug Task Force sponsorship of this annual Junior High Track meet will continue this year on May 05, 2022 at the Carsonville Port Sanilac High School Track & Field under the continued organizational efforts of Dan Dean.

The Drug Task Force Millage supported efforts fund this event and education and counseling in our schools to better improve the lives of our students and help focus on their safety and development.

Dan Dean has been instrumental both as a teacher and commissioner in supporting these goals.  Johnson said the award is a very much deserved recognition of Dean’s dedication to youth of Sanilac County.
