Sanilac and St. Clair county residents may see low-flying helicopters later this month while an electricity transmission company conducts aerial patrols of high-voltage transmission towers and lines in Michigan.

Between August 23rd to the 27th, ITC Holdings Corp. will conduct aerial patrols of towers and lines in the area, weather permitting.

The patrols are conducted to survey the overall status of the overhead transmission system, according to a press release from the company.

The inspections are often done at low altitudes to allow accurate inspection of the equipment. There is no cause for alarm if a low-flying helicopter is sighted near transmission lines, according to the company.

ITC said crews will check monopoles, steel towers, wood poles, conductors, insulators and other equipment for damaged or worn equipment, lighting hazards and vegetation hazards.

Based in Novi, Michigan, ITC Holdings Corp owns and operates two subsidiaries in the state that comprises 8,700 circuit miles of transmission line.
