Three rescued near Port Austin breakwall

Three people were treated for injuries after an incident off the breakwall in Port Austin Saturday

afternoon. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said a 16-year old female from Warren slipped off a ladder and was struggling in the water on the west side of the breakwall. Bystanders retrieved a life ring at the end of the wall and were able to throw it to the struggling girl until help arrived. A 22-year old and a 15-year old relative of the girl got into the water to support her but they also became exhausted and were injured from being pushed into the breakwall from rough wave action. The Port Austin Fire Department used their inflatable rescue boat to rescue the victims who were treated at the scene but refused further attention. Sheriff hanson said had the life ring not been available, one or more victims would have drown.
