Piston’s star Grand Marshall at Detroit Grand Prix

DETROIT, Mich. (May 23, 2019) – One of the Detroit’s biggest sports stars – literally – will serve as the Grand Marshal on Saturday, June 1 at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear. Detroit Pistons star player Andre Drummond will participate in many of Saturday’s activities at the Grand Prix as the Grand Marshal and the 6-foot, 11-inch center will deliver the iconic “Drivers, Start Your Engines” command prior to the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit Dual I NTT IndyCar Series race that will be televised live on NBC and locally on WDIV Local 4 in Detroit, at 3:30 pm ET on June 1.

Drummond will be a part of the most action-packed day of the 30th Grand Prix weekend in Detroit’s history with all three racing series in action as the NTT IndyCar Series, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli will all race on the Streets of Belle Isle on June 1. Drummond, a two-time NBA all-star, will participate in pre- and post-race ceremonies – including giving the command for drivers to start their engines and riding in the pace car at the front of the field just prior to the start of the first Chevy Dual in Detroit NTT IndyCar Series race of the weekend.

“Detroit is my adopted hometown and I love cars and I love the Motor City,” said Drummond. “The Grand Prix is such an important and historic event in Detroit and being Grand Marshal is a special honor. I’m excited to spend the day on Belle Isle and get a chance to meet some of the teams and drivers and ride in the pace car to start the IndyCar race.”

After establishing himself as one of the top high school basketball players in the country, Drummond attended the University of Connecticut for one year before entering the NBA Draft in 2012. The Pistons selected Drummond with the ninth overall pick in the draft that year and he was named to the All-NBA Rookie second team. One of the top two-way big men in basketball, Drummond was selected as an NBA All-Star in 2016 and 2018 and he led the league in rebounding in 2016, 2018 and in 2019. This past season he averaged a career-high 17.3 points per game to go along with 15.6 rebounds per game as the Pistons earned a spot in the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2016.

“We’re excited that Andre Drummond, one of the top sports stars in Detroit, will serve as our Grand Marshal on Saturday at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear,” said Bud Denker. “The Grand Prix weekend is one of the biggest weekends of the year in the Motor City so it’s fitting that one of biggest athletes in town will join us and add to the Saturday excitement on Belle Isle.”
