(SANILAC COUNTY) – Healthcare costs were on the mind of Commissioners Tuesday afternoon at the Board of Commission meeting. Administrator/Controller Tara Griffith was grilled by new board members Joe O’Mara and Joel Wyatt, Jr. regarding the process of buying coverage for county employees and the timing of the premium being due.
Griffith told the board the county was informed of a 10% increase in their $1.3 million dollar annual premium, causing a flood of questions from the newcomers.
Despite being assured they compare rates when possible, O’Mara hinted at possibly getting estimates for a new carrier while Wyatt did not like being forced in to a quick decision.
Griffith explained to the men the county had just received the new rates the first of May and made them available to the board at the first meeting of the month.
The county pays a hard cap premium for 156 employees with an Open Enrollment policy.
The county had two major claims the previous fiscal year, totaling just under one million dollars.
