A Lexington police officer sustained critical injuries

in this crash over the weekend in Sandusky

(SANDUSKY) – A Lexington police officer is in critical, but stable, condition after hitting a traffic light pole while attempting to avoid a head-on crash Sunday morning at the intersection of M-46 and M-19 in downtown Sandusky. A Sandusky police officer was on stationary patrol at the intersection and witnessed the crash.

The Lexington police cruiser was heading east through the intersection with the right of way when a vehicle driven by a 61-year-old Sandusky resident failed to yield and turned left in front of the officer.

The officer lost control of the cruiser due to wet road conditions and hit a light pole in the southeast corner of the intersection. Sanilac EMS transported the officer to McKenzie Health System in Sandusky for treatment of his injuries and he was later transferred to Ascension St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit.

Sandusky Police Chief Brett Lester said Monday morning that the officer is listed as critical, but stable, and remained in Intensive Care. Chief Lester said the officer was not wearing a seat belt and sustained serious injuries to his torso and lower extremities.

Lexington police have identified the officer as Sgt. Daniel Jonoshie.

The Sandusky Community Fire Department assisted police at the scene.
