(Port Huron Township) The St. Clair County Drug Task Force had a very busy year in 2017, thanks in part to an increased budget.
The DTF made 300 arrests, resulting in 389 felony and 161 misdemeanor charges. A total of 74 firearms were confiscated by the DTF.
The Drug Task Force also saw a huge growth in the amount of heroin and methamphetamine/crystal meth taken off the streets. 536 grams of heroin was seized by the DTF in 2017, a 74% increase from the year before. 821 grams of methamphetamine/crystal meth was seized, 48% more than in 2016.
The DTF also seized 301 grams of cocaine and raided 16 methamphetamine laboratories in 2017. More than 1900 doses of prescription pills were also taken off the streets.
“We are very thankful for those that voted to pass the increased millage for the Drug Task Force,” said Sheriff Tim Donnellon. “We have been able to essentially double to number of officers on the streets, which means more arrests and more illicit drugs being taken out of our community.”
Sheriff Donnellon went on to say that he is expecting another increase in arrests and drug seizures in 2018, as the DTF members brought in throughout 2017 will have a full year to battle the epidemic in our county.
The St. Clair County Drug Task Force consists of deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Port Huron Police Department, Clay Township Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
