(SANILAC COUNTY) – Sanilac County Clerk Denise McGuire recently met with staff at Sandusky Community schools regarding upcoming elections and new equipment that will be used. The county received new tabulating equipment from the State of Michigan, replacing outdated equipment that was over 10 years old and will put the new equipment to the test during various upcoming elections. McGuire has been in contact with many of the new Superintendents in the county, to make them familair with the process.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – The Deckerville school board has a new President and other officers, following action taken at their organizational meeting Monday evening. Board member Amy Dumaw was voted in as President and will be assisted by Vice-President Alysha Peruski, Secretary Michele Pattullo and Treasurer Spencer Osborne. Dumaw replaces Job Block who has served as President for the past several years. Board members were also recognized for their efforts of serving on the board, being presented with Certificates of Appreciation from Superintendent Mike Hugan.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – The 7th annual Ben Taylor Quiz Bowl Invitational was held Sautrday at Marlette High School with seven area high school teams taking part. The event is held to honor and remember former Marlette High student Ben Taylor who passed away in 2011. A total of 21 matches were held and when the dust settled, Sandusky led the pack going into the championship round, but was knocked out by Harbor Beach in a close match, winning on the last question. Most Valuable Players for the tournament were Jacob Shemka of Bad Axe, Hannah Emerick of Harbor Beach, Joe Wentzel of Sandusky, Joe Bartels & Nathan Wardin of Saginaw Nouvel, Raymond Shavers of Brown City and Sydney Vaughn of Marlette.
(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Port Huron Township firefighters responded to the scene of a structure fire in the 4400 block of Atkins Road that temporarily blocked the area to traffic Monday evening. According to the St. Clair County sheriff department, the call came in around 8 p.m., and there were no injuries reported as a result of the fire. The City of Port Huron and Kimball Township fire departments provided mutual aid. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – Medical students from Central Michigan University College of Medicine have begun their third year of study practicing in Sanilac and Lapeer Counties as a result of a partnership with McKenzie Health System and Marlette Regional Hospital, affiliates of United Healthcare Partners. Last week, McKenzie Health System and Marlette Regional Hospital welcomed two CMU medical students to their facilities and communities. Students Neel Patel and Ivanna Murskyj will work in partnership with clinical physicians and staff as part of a six-month program. Marlette and McKenzie are in their fourth year of hosting students.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – Marlette Regional Hospital, in partnership with Vascular Health Clinics, is offering reduced rate cardiovascular screening opportunities February 1st, 15th and March 1st and 15th by appointment only. Screenings will be performed by Marlette Regional Hospital’s cardiopulmonary team and will be interpreted by an on-site cardiologist. Six screenings, including heart and cholerterol testing, will be offered for a fee of $30. Patients must schedule an appointment to participate and can call 989-635-4360.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – McKenzie Health System and Marlette Regional Hospital have accepted the “Commit to be Fit” six-week weight-loss challenge. Teams of employees will work together to focus on weight loss, exercise and creating good lifelong habits. The challenge runs January 15 through February 27. Members of the team, from each organization, with the highest percentage of weight loss, will be awarded $50 gift cards. Hospital officials said their employees are leading the way and practicing what they preach in an effort to be stronger together. Among the goals are to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water for a minimum of three days and to cut out sweets by avoiding cookies, cakes and candy for at least three days, replacing it with healthier snack foods.
(HURON COUNTY) – Harbor Beach officials are taking care of business, paying their annual payments for emergency services in the city. An annual fee of around $8,500, or $5 per resident in the City, is being paid to Eastern Michigan Ambulance, an EMS service that covers several entities on the east side of Huron County. Council paid the Harbor Beach fire department half of their annual fees that total $61,000. Sand Beach is also part of the fire department coverage area and will pay a similar amount.
(AREA) – With the warmer temperatures that have been in the area the last several days, the U.S. Coast Guard is cautioning people in Ohio and southeast Michigan to stay off of ice on rivers and lakes until the ice is more stable. Coast Guard Sector Detroit’s Command Center responded to multiple people in distress, including three fatalities. A majroity of the incidents involvedvehicles breaking through the ice. The U.S. Coast Guard and officials in Canada work closely together to check ice conditions on a regular basis throughout the Great Lakes.
