Man jailed after fight in Port Hope

A 58-year old man was arrested after a fight

 
(PORT HOPE) – A quarrel between relatives at the Port Hope Hotel around 11:00 last Saturday night started with a fist fight and escalated into shots fired at a nearby cottage in Huron County.
According to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, a 58-year-old man was taken in custody without incident after police from Harbor Beach, Port Austin and the Huron County Sheriff Department responded to the cottage on Kaufmann Road. Police say after the altercation at the Port Hope Hotel, the man had returned to the cottage where he grabbed a 12-guage shotgun.
Witnesses say he then fired twice into an unknown direction and then three times into a parked car. As he was leaving the area, the relatives returned in another vehicle. The suspect then rammed their vehicle twice with his and then left the scene.
He was jailed on 6 counts of felonious assault, 2 counts of malicious destruction of property, 1 count of reckless discharge of a firearm and 1 count of being in possession of a firearm while intoxicated. The shotgun and a 40 cal. handgun were found in weeds nearby.
Formal charges were expected to be filed last week. The suspect remains lodged in the Huron County jail on a $50,000 cash bond. The only injuries sustained occurred during the fight at the hotel.
