(SANDUSKY) – City and airport officials gathered at the Sandusky Airport Thursday afternoon for groundbreaking ceremonies for a new hangar facility to be constructed this fall. Private investor Scott McKeand and his family were on hand for the event, and said this is something the city has needed for some time.
“We met as an airport group, and tried to think what was best for the community. What did we need here? As a group we came up with this idea and our family is excited to see this becoming reality.”
City council members and staff, Airport Board members and the McKeand family were on hand for the ceremonies. The new facility, complete with a heated floor and capabilities to house larger planes or small jets, will be located between the new terminal and an existing hangar to the west. Currently, the airport has 32 planes in storage and is considered full.
City Manager Dave Faber is excited to see the building plans and feels the project will mean good things for Sandusky. “Besides the obvious benefits at the airport for more planes and possibly maintenance or a repair shop, there is potentially increased economic development throughout the region by people flying in to do business, or flying out of the airport for work. We have the capabilities for small passenger planes, up to 10 passengers, to land here and there are more improvements planned for the future.”
Among the plans for the future is an extension of the main runway to allow for small jets to fly into the airport and an Instrument Control Landing system to better serve pilots. McKeand said the total investment for the project is around $500,000
