Elected officials seek wage adjustments

Wages were on the mind of Sanilac County elected officials Tuesday afternoon when a number of those officials approached the Board of Commissioners about prevailing wages. Prosecutor James Young pointed out to the board Sanilac elected officials are well below the average of a 10-county wage study and asked what the board’s plan was. County Clerk Denise McGuire said her department has generated over $30,000 in additional revenue for the county and didn’t feel an adjustment to salaries was out of line. It was pointed out the county had already spent $20,000 on a wage study a few years ago and some didn’t see a need to spend additional taxpayer money on another study.
Commissioners agreed to contact officials from the Michigan Municipal League for clarification on a 10-county study of wages and to possibly consider making adjustments for the Elected Officials by the beginning of next year.
In other board news, commissioners gave approval of adding two full-time Corrections Officers and one full-time Uniform Services deputy to the Sheriff Department, with minimal effects on the general budget, due to overtime already being paid.
The board also gave approval for the Parks and Rec department to seek funding support in their purchase of $84,000 worth of playground equipment at Evergreen Park.
The committee is seeking a DNR grant of $45,000 to help cover a portion of the cost of the project.
