(PORT HURON) — The Port Huron Fire Department responded to a porch fire Thursday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Harker Street. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and determined that the fire was the result of improper disposal of cigarettes. Fire Marshal, Captain Larry Warren, says the department has seen a notable increase in fires being started by careless use or disposal of smoking material. Residents are reminded to make sure hot items are completely extinguished and placed in a metal or noncombustible container away from buildings. The concern is high at this time as the DNR has declared an extreme fire danger warning for southeastern Michigan, due to extremely dry conditions. The conditions could result in dangerous grass and brush fires.
