(PORT HURON) — Financial help could be coming to the city of Port Huron in efforts to keep open the Black River Canal. City Manager James Freed has proposed Port Huron Township and Fort Gratiot help pay for as much of half of the cost of dredging the canal. Residents from there would have access to Lakeside Park at city rates in return. According to Freed, the dredging costs about $25,000 to $30,000 a year. The canal becomes impassable for boats when it fills with sediment at its Lake Huron end. The proposal calls for the townships to each pay 25 percent of dredging costs with an $8,500 cap, and the city covering the rest. The agreement would have to be approved by all three municipal boards to take effect.
