Slender towers rise to dizzying heights on NYC skyline

NEW YORK (AP) – Changes in building technology in recent years have taken skyscraper construction around the world to new heights. Experts say more so-called “supertall” skyscrapers have been built since 2010 than in the 80 years prior. And in places like New York City, these new giants aren’t just supertall, but superslim. One newly completed Manhattan apartment building is 1,396 feet tall, but only about 93 feet wide. That’s higher than the Empire State Building, but only as wide as the length of a basketball court. Another eight supertall skyscrapers are slated to be completed in New York City by 2020. One of them could be the skinniest skyscraper in the world, at 1,400 feet tall and just 58 feet wide.
