(MACOMB COUNTY) — The trial for a St. Clair County man accused of killing a 14-year-old girl along a popular suburban Detroit nature trail is underway and expected to last several weeks in Macomb County Circuit Court. 34-year-old James VanCallis has been charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, and assault with intent to rape in the death of April Millsap. Authorities say he hit the teen with a motorcycle helmet and stomped on her in July 2014 while she was walking her dog along the Macomb Orchard Trail in Armada. April died of blunt head trauma and asphyxia because of neck compression. VanCallis was charged with murder in October 2014. His lawyer has said there’s no DNA evidence linking his client to the crime.
