|Recurring Event (See all)
Every day until April 15, 2020

The Sanilac County Historical Society (SCHS) is inviting all Sanilac County 3rd graders to participate in the “Name The Beetle” Contest.

Shirley Schmidt Research Chair at SCHS, explains, “The Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle was brought to us in the mid 1900’s from Costa Rica, by Captain Stanley Harrison, who lived in the Loop-Harrison Mansion.  The Rhinoceros Beetle is one of the strongest insects in the world, capable of lifting 850 times it’s body weight.  That would be equivalent to a human lifting an elephant!”

Each entry must include: Student’s full name, School, Teacher’s name, and the suggested name for the beetle and why it was chosen.  Two true facts and one made-up fact about Rhinoceros Beetles.

The deadline for submission is April 15, 2020, and should be mailed to SCHS P.O. Box 158 Port Sanilac, MI 48469.  The winning name will be chosen by the “Name The Beetle” Committee members.  The winning entry will be chosen on originality, creativity, grammar, and spelling.  The winner will be announced in early May and will receive a plush beetle.  A plaque with the winner’s name will sit beside the beetle in the exhibit at the museum.

It is not mandatory, and will not influence the contest results, but students are encouraged to get creative with their submissions by including drawings and paintings..

Fiona Fisher, third grade teacher at Carsonville/Port Sanilac Schools, is excited about the contest, telling us. “this will be lots of fun for the kids.  I love how SCHS incorporated so many curricular areas: writing, science, and art too! Fantastic!”

The SCHS looks forward to receiving entries from the 3rd grade students and wishes them all the best of luck!  The community is also welcome to drop by to have a first-hand look at the Museum’s Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle.
