ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Matt Leinart struggled in his debut for the quarterback-depleted Buffalo Bills, who closed the preseason with 35-13 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday night. Looking like someone who's had just three days practice, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner went 3 for 10 for 11 yards and two interceptions before being yanked after five possessions. That represents a major concern for Buffalo (2-2), which scrambled to sign the 2006 first-round draft pick Sunday after losing its top two quarterbacks to injury. First-round draft pick EJ Manuel is recovering from a left knee injury, while veteran Kevin Kolb is out indefinitely with a concussion. Lions second- and third-string quarterbacks Shaun Hill and Kellen Moore threw two touchdown passes each in helping Detroit build a 35-3 lead at the half.
DETROIT (AP) - Torii Hunter hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting Detroit over the Oakland Athletics 7-6 Thursday and saving the Tigers after Max Scherzer was denied his 20th win and Miguel Cabrera limped off with an injury. The Tigers scored four times in the ninth off Grant Balfour (0-3). A two-out walk set up Victor Martinez' RBI single, then Hunter homered as the Tigers avoided a sweep. Scherzer gave up six runs in five innings. The no-decision left him with a 19-1 record. Cabrera hurt his abdomen making an awkward slide trying to stretch a single into a double. He was listed as day to day with discomfort. The reigning Triple Crown winner has been hobbled this month with a strain in his groin, abdominal and hip area. He's also had a banged-up left leg.
DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Tigers superstar Miguel Cabrera has left another game with an injury. Cabrera appeared to land awkwardly on his right knee when he was trying to reach second base on a hit in the fifth inning Thursday afternoon against the Oakland Athletics. The reigning Triple Crown winner talked briefly to the team's athletic trainer and manager Jim Leyland as he limped off the field and was replaced by Don Kelly. Cabrera has been hobbled this month with a strain in his groin, abdominal and hip area. He previously was playing with a banged-up left leg. He had two hits before Thursday, increasing his major league leading batting average to .359, but did not add to his baseball-best 130 RBIs or 43 homers that trail only Baltimore's Chris Davis.
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Marathon will accept an extra 9,000 runners for next year's race to accommodate the 5,633 who were stopped on the course this year when two bombs went off near the finish line. The expanded field of 36,000 will also allow many who have said they want to run to honor the victims of the bombings that killed three and injured hundreds more.
TRINITY, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR driver Bobby Labonte has been released from the hospital a day after he broke three ribs in a bike riding accident near his North Carolina home. The 49-year old will miss this weekend's Sprint Cup race in Atlanta. He'll be replaced in the car by Mike Bliss.

DETROIT (AP) - Brandon Moss homered twice, drove in a career-high six runs in the Oakland Athletics' 14-4 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Moss has three home runs in his past two games for Oakland, which had a season-high 21 hits and has won the first three games of the four-game series by a combined 28-13. Josh Donaldson had three hits and drove in two runs and Eric Sogard had two RBIs for the Athletics. Torii Hunter homered for the AL Central-leading Tigers. Hunter and Victor Martinez each had three hits. Oakland starter Daniel Straily got his first win since July 9. He allowed a run and eight hits over six innings, walking two and striking out four.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Matt Leinart's long wait is finally over. Thanks to injuries to the Bills' top two quarterbacks, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner has an opportunity to continue his career by competing for a backup spot in Buffalo. Signed Sunday, Leinart gets a one-game tryout to prove himself Thursday, when Buffalo closes the preseason hosting Detroit. Leinart said he's humbled and excited to get a shot after spending the offseason out of football. This is not what the former Southern California star anticipated in 2006, when he was drafted 10th overall by the Arizona Cardinals. He spent four unproductive seasons in Arizona before losing the starting job to Kurt Warner. After stints in Houston and Oakland, he's on his third team in as many years. Kick off Thursday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
DETROIT (AP) - Brandon Moss hit a tiebreaking two-run homer off Justin Verlander, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 6-3 in a game cut short by rain on Tuesday night. Seth Smith hit a leadoff homer in the sixth, and Oakland had the bases loaded with no one out when the tarp was pulled on the field due to the weather. It was called after an 80-minute delay. Oakland starter Tommy Milone allowed three runs in the first, and then pitched four scoreless innings for the complete game. The left-hander improved to 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA in his last six starts.
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Tigers activated catcher Alex Avila from the concussion disabled list Tuesday and optioned catcher Bryan Holaday to Triple-A Toledo. Avila had been sidelined since Aug. 11 because of a concussion he sustained three days earlier on a foul tip off his mask in Cleveland. His return was delayed by headaches after his first rehab game in Toledo, but he played the last three days without any symptoms and was cleared by team doctors. Holaday is hitting .280 in a pair of major-league stints this season, both during disabled-list stays for Avila.
