DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says its stings to have the season end by losing a 3-1 series lead against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks beat Detroit 2-1 in overtime Wednesday night to advance to the Western Conference finals. Holland says he has mixed emotions about the lockout-shortened year. He's disappointed Detroit couldn't win one more game to advance for a second time this postseason. Holland is encouraged, though, by how well the team's veterans led and the ways in which its inexperienced players improved during a rebuilding season. The Red Wings hope to agree to win-win deals with Damien Brunner, Valtteri Filppula, Daniel Cleary and Drew Miller before they hit the market as unrestricted free agents. They also want to extend Pavel Datsyuk's contract in July.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions have signed special teams standout Montell Owens. The team didn't disclose terms of Owens' contract on Thursday. Owens was cut two weeks ago by the Jacksonville Jaguars after playing in 104 games for them over seven seasons and setting a franchise record with 118 tackles on special teams. He also has 56 career carries - a career-high 42 in 2012 - for 292 yards and three touchdowns along with 12 receptions for 132 yards. Owens, who is from Wilmington, Del., was at Buffalo Bills practice last week.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Russell Martin hit a bases-loaded single off the left-center wall in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday night. Neil Walker opened the inning with a sharp single to right off Luke Putkonen (1-1) and Andrew McCutchen walked. Gaby Sanchez loaded the bases by bouncing a single through the left side of the infield. Martin then ripped a 2-1 pitch into the gap to give the Pirates (34-20) their 16th win in 20 games. The Tigers left 11 runners on base as they lost their third straight. Detroit starter Doug Fister struck out 12 in seven innings and allowed four hits.  Miguel Cabrera hit two doubles for the Tigers. Bryan Morris (3-2) pitched a scoreless inning.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions claimed quarterback Thaddeus Lewis off waivers Wednesday and released quarterback Alex Carder. Lewis started last season as an undrafted free agent in St. Louis but spent most of the year on Cleveland's practice squad. He started the Browns' final game last season and threw for 204 yards with a touchdown and interception. Lewis, Shaun Hill and Kellen Moore are behind starter Matthew Stafford. Carder was an undrafted free agent from Western Michigan.

CHICAGO (AP) - Brent Seabrook sent a wrist shot past goalie Jimmy Howard's glove 3:35 into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 7 of their second-round playoff series on Wednesday night. The Blackhawks, who had the best record in the NHL regular season, rallied from a 3-1 series deficit to reach the Western Conference finals against the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings. Seabrook picked up a loose puck and skated in on Howard through the middle of the ice, with Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall in front of him. His shot appeared to hit Kronwall's leg before it sailed into the left side of the net for the Chicago defenseman' first goal of the postseason. The sellout crowd of 22,103 roared as Seabrook skated over to the boards and was mobbed by his teammates.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pedro Alvarez's two-run double sparked a seventh-inning rally and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Wednesday night. Travis Snider added an RBI double and Jordy Mercer laid down a perfect suicide squeeze as the Pirates erupted late against Anibal Sanchez (5-5) and scored four times. Miguel Cabrera hit his 15th homer of the season for Detroit and Andy Dirks had an RBI double, but that couldn't prevent the Tigers from falling to Pittsburgh for the second straight night. Bryan Morris (2-2) picked up the win in relief of A.J. Burnett. Jason Grilli pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 22nd save. Sanchez cruised through the first six innings, surrendering only a solo home run to Neil Walker. Things unraveled in the seventh as the Pirates batted around.

WEBBER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities are searching for Cullen Finnerty, a quarterback who led Grand Valley State to three Division II national football championships after he failed to return from fishing near his northern Michigan cabin. The Lake County sheriff's department says the search continued Monday evening for the 30-year-old Finnerty, who didn't return Sunday night. WZZM-TV says his family owns a cabin near Bray Creek State Forest Campground. The site is near Baldwin and about 65 miles north of Grand Rapids. Authorities say searchers found a small pontoon boat Finnerty was using to fish. Finnerty played for Grand Valley State teams that won Division II titles in 2003, 2005 and 2006, and he briefly played for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Verlander struck out 13 in seven innings and Jhonny Peralta had four hits to lead the Detroit Tigers over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Monday. It was Peralta's first four-hit game since June 4, 2010, when he was playing for Cleveland. Detroit has won six of seven. Verlander (6-4) hadn't pitched more than five innings in any of his previous three starts, struggling at times with his location. But he was sharp for the most part against Pittsburgh, allowing three runs and seven hits with two walks. Joaquin Benoit allowed two runs - one earned - in the eighth. Jose Valverde finished for his sixth save in seven chances. Francisco Liriano (3-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings.

DETROIT (AP) - Bryan Bickell scored a go-ahead goal early in the third period and the Chicago Blackhawks held on to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in Game 6 on Monday night, giving the NHL's top-seeded team a shot to advance to the Western Conference finals. The Blackhawks, who trailed the second round series 3-1, began the third down by one and were up by two goals midway through the period after an offensive flurry. They needed the cushion because Damien Brunner scored with 52 seconds left to pull Detroit within one. The Red Wings pulled their goaltender, but they were unable to score with the extra skater. Game 7 will be Wednesday, May 29 in Chicago at 8 p.m.

DETROIT (AP) - IndyCar says qualifying for the second race of series doubleheaders at Belle Isle, Toronto and Houston will be split into two groups. All cars will be split into the groups for 12 minutes each, with five minutes of guaranteed green-flag time. That's a change from the initial plan for a 30-minute, all-car session. Series race director Beaux Barfield says splitting up qualifying for the second race of these doubleheaders will "give a premium to the amount of track time available to each competitor" and "improve the ability for competitors to get a clean lap and post a true lap time." IndyCar is hosting doubleheader races at Belle Isle (June 1-2), Toronto (July 13-14) and Houston (Oct. 5-6).
