(AREA) -- The Thumb Area Quiz Bowl League recently concluded its tournaments for the school year. The Tournament of Champions and final League Championship were held at the Sanilac Career Center in Peck with over 150 students from eleven area high schools competing.
The Tournament of Champions featured students competing as individuals for top awards by subject and grade level. Courtney Schantz of Brown City took first place in math, Adam Krause of Marlette won first place in Language Arts, Austin Buerkle of Sandusky took top honors in science, and Evan Tino of Sandusky won first in social studies and current events.
Marlette High School finished the Winter League in first place and Bad Axe won the League Championship Tournament in a close match over Sandusky with a score of 125-120. Marlette finished the tournament in third place and Brown City took fourth. Several local high school quiz bowl teams will take part in the State Quiz Bowl Championship April 19 and 20 on the MSU campus in East Lansing.
(SANDUSKY) -- The Second Annual 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, May 25 in Sandusky, with proceeds to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. This year's event is being coordinated by Miss Sanilac County Outstanding Teen Samantha Orchard and her mother, Julie. Check-in and registration at Maple Valley Elementary School's south parking lot will run from 8-8:45 a.m. The 5K Walk/Run will start at 9 a.m. Walkers will use the Diamond Trail and runners will follow a pre-determined 5K route throughout Sandusky. The cost is $15 per person on or before May 13th and $20 after May 13th. All entries received on or before May 13th will receive a T-Shirt.
