DETROIT (AP) - Jimmy Howard made 22 saves, and Jakub Kindl and Cory Emmerton scored in the second period to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Thursday night. Justin Abdelkader's empty-net goal put the game out of reach. Howard made 36 saves in a win Tuesday against Colorado, but coach Mike Babcock wasn't all that impressed with his team's overall performance that night. The Red Wings were sharper defensively against Edmonton and took control in the second period, when they outshot the Oilers 15-7. Detroit is 10-0-1 in its last 11 regular-season games against Edmonton. Saturday the Red Wings visit the Columbus Blue Jackets at 2 p.m. and Sunday the Blue Jackets come to the Joe at 5 p.m.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner has been granted an extra season of eligibility because of medical hardship. The school says Gardner now has two seasons of eligibility remaining. He played in three games in 2010 as a freshman before a season-ending back injury. Gardner began last season as a wide receiver but started the final five games at quarterback. He'll be under even more pressure in 2013 as Michigan moves on without star Denard Robinson. The Wolverines start spring practice March 16.
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Lions have signed punter Blake Clingan. Clingan has never punted in an NFL game, but he averaged 39.9 yards in four seasons at Central Florida from 2007-10. The Lions announced the move Tuesday. Detroit ranked last in the league in yards per punt last season. Ben Graham hurt his left calf in a September loss at Tennessee, forcing kicker Jason Hanson to take over during that game. The Lions then signed Nick Harris, who averaged 41.5 yards on 67 punts for the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio has added former Ohio State assistant Jim Bollman to his shuffled staff. Dantonio announced Monday that Bollman has been hired as co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. Bollman leaves Purdue, where he was hired last month to be its offensive line coach after working last year at Boston College. He previously worked with Dantonio at Ohio State, Youngstown State and with the Spartans when they both were assistants for Nick Saban. Michigan State also gave defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi the title of assistant head coach. Dave Warner becomes a co-offensive coordinator and shifts to coaching the running backs after previously being the team's quarterbacks coach. Brad Salem moves from coaching running backs to quarterbacks along with being the recruiting coordinator.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan has hired former Wolverines linebacker Roy Manning as an assistant coach. Wolverines coach Brady Hoke made the announcement Monday. Manning will coach outside linebackers. Defensive coordinator Greg Mattison adds the title of defensive line coach. Manning played in 37 games at Michigan from 2001-04. The former Saginaw High School star was in 21 NFL games over the next three years with Green Bay, Houston and Cincinnati. Hoke had Manning as a graduate assistant in 2011 in his first year leading the Wolverines. Manning leaves Northern Illinois, where he was hired in January, after coaching running backs at Cincinnati last season. Manning fills a spot on Hoke's staff vacated by defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, who left last month for the same job at Oklahoma.
