Stars slip past Red Wings 4-3 in OT

DETROIT (AP) - Rich Peverley's goal at 4:41 of overtime completed a comeback and gave the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Peverley beat Howard on a wrist shot from the high slot. Shawn Horcoff, Jamie Benn and Cody Eakin also for Dallas. Kari Lehtonen stopped 26 shots. Todd Bertuzzi and Pavel Datsyuk each had a goal and an assist, Adam Almquist got his first career goal for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight at home. Henrik Zetterberg had three assists. Jimmy Howard made 24 saves. Eakin's power-play goal at 18:50 of third, and with Lehtonen pulled to make it a 6-on-4 advantage, tied the game at 3. It was Eakin's fourth goal. Saturday the Red Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Joe at 7 p.m.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan center Mitch McGary will miss Friday night's season opener against UMass-Lowell because of a lingering back problem. Coach John Beilein didn't offer many details about McGary's condition or progress. The 6-foot-10 sophomore was named to the AP's preseason All-America team, but it's not clear when he'll be able to take the court this season. The seventh-ranked Wolverines will raise a banner Friday before the game to commemorate last season's run to the Final Four. McGary averaged 7.5 points per game last season as a freshman, but in the NCAA tournament he averaged 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds, helping the Wolverines reach the national championship game, which they lost to Louisville.

Bears' Cutler to start vs Lions on Sunday

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) - Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will start against the Detroit Lions on Sunday after missing one game with a groin muscle tear. Coach Marc Trestman confirmed Cutler's return Thursday following practice, saying doctors have given Cutler the clearance to play. Trestman said Cutler will not be restricted in any way due to the injury. Cutler suffered the injury against the Washington Redskins Oct. 20 when he was sacked during the 45-41 loss. The Bears had a bye the following week, then Josh McCown started and played all of Monday night's 27-20 win at Green Bay. Cutler has completed 146 of 225 passes for 1,658 yards and 12 touchdowns with seven interceptions. McCown completed 36 of 61 for 476 yards and did not turn the ball over as Cutler's replacement. Kick off at 1 p.m. with pre-game at NOON on 97.7 WTGV-FM.

Lions healthy but taking nothing for granted

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions aren't about to rejoice over the misfortune of others. Even after two rival quarterbacks went down with injuries, the Lions are taking nothing for granted. The Lions are tied for first with the Packers and Bears in the NFC North, but Green Bay lost Aaron Rodgers to a broken collarbone Monday night, and Jay Cutler hasn't played for Chicago since Oct. 20 because of a torn groin. The Lions play at Chicago this weekend. It's not clear when Cutler will return, but if he can't come back against Detroit, the Bears will have Josh McCown ready. McCown threw for 272 yards in Monday's win over Green Bay.

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Jordin Tootoo on waivers Wednesday. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says if Tootoo isn't claimed by Thursday, the team plans to keep him in Detroit. Tootoo does not have a point in eight games this season in the second year of his $5.7 million, three-year contract. He played in one playoff game last year after an eight-point, lockout-shortened regular season. The Red Wings signed Tootoo in the summer of 2012, hoping he would give them a physical presence after playing against him many times. Nashville drafted Tootoo in 2001 and he had spent his entire career with the Predators, racking up 725 career penalty minutes and 125 points. Detroit hosts the Dallas Stars on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Jones returning to Tigers as pitching coach

DETROIT (AP) - Pitching coach Jeff Jones will remain with the Detroit Tigers under new manager Brad Ausmus. The Tigers also announced Wednesday they have hired Dave Clark as third base coach and outfield instructor. Jones became Detroit's pitching coach in the middle of the 2011 season, and the Tigers have developed one of the game's best starting rotations. Max Scherzer is a front-runner for the AL Cy Young Award this year, and Justin Verlander won it in 2011. Ausmus was hired after manager Jim Leyland retired. Gene Lamont is staying on as bench coach and Jones will be back, as well. Clark spent five seasons with the Houston Astros. He was first base coach last season after four years as third base coach.

Big Ten struggling to fill 8 reserved bowl slots

UNDATED (AP) - No. 4 Ohio State is chasing perfection and a chance play for a national championship. No. 18 Michigan State has the inside track to the Big Ten championship game. Four other conference teams are bowl-eligible and Iowa could join that list with a win this weekend. But with only four weeks left in the regular season, the Big Ten is looking at the possibility of coming up short in postseason play again - even before the bowl lineups are announced. With eight bowl tie-ins, six qualifiers and Iowa on the cusp, the last available spot will have to be filled by one of three teams that are a combined 1-12 in league play this season: Illinois, Indiana or Northwestern.

Stafford maturing, staying healthy for Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - Matthew Stafford's latest highlight had more to do with his wits than his arm. With Detroit trailing by six and seconds ticking away, Stafford could have simply spiked the ball to stop the clock. Instead he surprised the Dallas defense and even some of his own teammates by lunging forward and reaching the ball toward the goal line - and his 1-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left gave the Lions a win over the Cowboys. If Stafford's risky move hadn't worked, the Lions might have run out of time, but their franchise quarterback is proving he can be trusted to make the right decisions with the game on the line.
