WIXOM, Mich. (AP) - Ford Motor Co. is in the process of tearing down about a quarter of its sprawling former assembly plant in the Detroit suburb of Wixom. Company spokeswoman Becky Sanch said Wednesday the automaker is "in sales negotiations on the property," and the demolition "is agreed upon by everyone involved." The City of Wixom has said the site is being razed "in preparation of a bright new future." The Wixom Assembly Plant closed in 2007 after a half-century of producing the Lincoln Town Car, Ford Thunderbird and GT and the Lincoln Continental. According to figures supplied by Ford at the time of the plant's closing, peak employment was nearly 5,500 in 1973. Wixom Assembly comprised 4.7 million square feet on 320 acres and included 15 miles of assembly line.

"There is a tremendous transformation taking place in the city, and the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix is an amazing opportunity to showcase our city to the world. We look forward to a weekend full of exciting racing."

Series officials announced in October that not only has more than 80,000 square feet of the track surface been repaved this fall, but a half-mile straightaway has also been added between Turns 2 and 3 to create more passing opportunities and exciting racing action.
"Combined with the changes we've made to the track on Belle Isle, the Dual in Detroit IndyCar races will bring a whole new level of excitement to the 2013 Grand Prix," said Bud Denker, Event Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. "We're very excited to welcome Quicken Loans as presenting sponsor of the Dual in Detroit. As a Detroit-based business that supports great events in our community, we know Quicken Loans will be a terrific partner as we continue to grow the Grand Prix."
