(AREA) -- The North Branch Broncos volleyball team is headed to the MHSAA Class B State Championship game Saturday at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The Broncos will play Lake Odessa Lakewood starting at 4 p.m. On Thursday the Broncos defeated Whitehall in the semifinals three games to one--25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23.
The Unionville Sebewaing volleyball team's season ended Thursday at the hands of Traverse City St. Francis in the Class C Semifinals. The Patriots lost 23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-13. Traverse City St. Francis will play Monroe SMCC at Noon Saturday in the finals.
(DETROIT) -- With their season slipping away, the Detroit Lions return home for a crucial three-game stretch at Ford Field, starting with Sunday's game against Green Bay. At this time last year, the Lions were one of the NFL's big success stories, on their way to their first playoff berth in a dozen years with a dynamic young roster. That seems like a long time ago now. Detroit is 4-5 and facing a daunting schedule the rest of the way. (PHILADELPHIA) -- Greg Monroe had 19 points, 18 rebounds and six assists to help the Detroit Pistons beat the Philadelphia 76ers 94-76 on Wednesday night for their first win of the season. Kyle Singler scored 16 points, and Tayshaun Prince and Brandon Knight each scored 15 points for a Detroit (1-8) team off to its worst start in franchise history. Playing their seventh road game out of nine games this season, the Pistons controlled the lethargic Sixers from the opening tip. Four Pistons starters scored in double digits and forward Jason Maxiell had eight points and 12 rebounds. Friday the Pistons host the Orlando Magic at The Palace of Auburn Hills with tip off at 7:30 p.m.
(NORTH BRANCH) -- The North Branch Broncos volleyball team defeated Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in the Class B Quarterfinals Tuesday three games to none. The Broncos came back from a 22-19 deficit in the third set to sweep the match 25-18, 25-14, 26-24.They advance to the Semifinals for the third time in four years and play Whitehall Thursday, November 15 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. The first match starts at 5:30 p.m. Whitehall won in five sets over Cadillac on Tuesday. With a victory the Lady Broncos can advance to the finals Saturday in Battle Creek. They made it to the finals in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010. The girls won the championship over Delton Kellogg in 2009 then lost a marathon five set match to Fruitport in 2010.
NEW YORK (AP) - NHL owners and players were back at the bargaining table after a one-day break. The sides met for about 90 minutes Sunday at the league office in Manhattan in an effort to end a lockout that is approaching the two-month mark. There are no plans yet to meet again. Talks took place for four straight days earlier in the week before heated discussions ended the run Friday night. The decision to formally meet again came Sunday morning. The lockout already has caused the NHL to call off 327 regular-season games, including the New Year's Day Winter Classic. A lockout wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.
AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - A chaotic race at Phoenix blew NASCAR's championship fight wide open Sunday. Brad Keselowski moved to the brink of a first Sprint Cup title for himself and team owner Roger Penske. Keselowski heads into next week's season finale with a 20-point lead over five-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson. His car was better than Johnson's, but he capitalized when a tire failure caused Johnson to crash hard and finish 32nd.
(AREA) -- The Deckerville Eagles football team is going to the MHSAA 8-man finals. On Saturday, the Eagles defeated Portland St. Patricks 36-30 in double overtime. The Eagles will play Bellaire for the State Championship this Friday at 7 p.m. at Greenville High School's Legacy Field in Greenville. Kick off is at 7 p.m. with a pre-game broadcast on WTGV-FM 97.7 beginning at 6:05 p.m.
The Harbor Beach Pirates will play in the Division 8 Semi-finals against Muskegon Catholic Central Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alma College. The Pirates defeated Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes Saturday 17-10 in Regional play. Muskegon Catholic Central defeated Medon 28-6.
Tuesday, November 13, the North Branch Broncos volleyball team will play Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in the CLASS B Quarter-finals at Notre Dame Prep starting at 7 p.m. The Broncos won the Regional Championship last Thursday at Croswell-Lexington by defeating Mount Morris EA Johnson 3 games to none.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Michigan wide receiver Roy Roundtree has bounced back from a slow start this season. Roundtree has 203 yards receiving in his last two games to surpass his production from the first eight games of the year. He leaped to tip and catch a 53-yard pass Saturday that set a field goal with 2 seconds left to extend a game the Wolverines won 38-31 in overtime over Northwestern. Roundtree finished with 139 yards receiving - the second highest total of his career - against the Wildcats. The 23rd-ranked Wolverines (7-3, 5-1) hope the fifth-year senior can help them finish the regular season with wins Saturday at home against Iowa--kick off at Noon and the next week at Ohio State--kick off at Noon.
The Michigan State Spartans (5-5, 2-4) are coming off a bye week and host the Northwestern Wildcats Saturday with kick off at Noon. Next Saturday they will visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Adrian Peterson raced 61 yards for the game-sealing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, padding his NFL rushing lead with 171 yards on 27 carries for the Minnesota Vikings in a 34-24 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon. Peterson had 120 yards in the final 15 minutes, 10 1/2 months after reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Ponder bounced back from a rough game with 221 yards and two touchdowns on 24-for-32 passing for the Vikings (6-4). Calvin Johnson had 207 yards on 12 catches, including a touchdown that brought the Lions (4-5) a little closer with 1:53 left. But Johnson's lost fumble near midfield on the previous possession put Vikings rookie Blair Walsh in position for his fourth field goal. LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions say Kid Rock plans to perform during halftime of the team's Thanksgiving Day game against the Houston Texans at Detroit's Ford Field. The team and the United Way announced Friday that the show will include Kid Rock's new song "Detroit, Michigan." The track references a number of the city's music stars, including Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Eminem as well as other big names, such as Rosa Parks and Henry Ford. The song "Detroit, Michigan" is on Kid Rock's album "Rebel Soul," which is to be released Nov. 19. Born Robert Ritchie in a suburb northeast of Detroit, Kid Rock continues to live in the area and is an outspoken booster of the city and state. The halftime show will celebrate the 125th anniversary of United Way.
